Upcoming Divorce Recovery Groups
(Children, Adolescents and Adults)

A 6-week divorce recovery group will be held for children (ages 7-11) and for adolescents (ages 12-16) whose parents are separated, currently going through a divorce or who are divorced. The child and adolescent groups will focus on coping skills and strategies to help them through this challenging time.

The adult group will provide a 4-week supportive educational class for individuals (with or without children) who are coping with marriage or relationship break-up. The adult class will meet at the same time and same building but in a different office as the child and adolescent groups, however, adults without children are invited to join the class as well.

Child and Adolescent Groups:
Dates: September 6, 13, 20, 27 and October 4 & 11, 2008
Time: Ages 7 to 11: 9:00am- 10:00am / Ages 12 to 16: 11:00am- 12:00pm
Cost: $25.00 per participant per session

Parker Youth Wanted to Paint Art Mural in Mainstreet Center Gym

The Town of Parker would like to invite students from local schools, art groups, clubs and other organizations, as well as individuals, to participate in the painting of a large art mural at the Mainstreet Center gym, located at 19650 E. Mainstreet. The theme of the project is “Youth
Art in Parker” and Parker youth from ages eight to 18 are encouraged to come and paint their vision of what they think the Town looks like. The mural will be created in panels and installed around the gym. "We're excited about the energy and vitality the mural project will bring to
the gym, which is heavily used by local kids," said Cindy Galasso, Mainstreet Center Coordinator.

If you would like to be a part of the mural project, but are unable to come to the Mainstreet Center, painting supplies can be dropped off at your organization and the art panels that your organization creates will be incorporated into the permanent display.

Four public painting sessions are planned: July 26 from 4 to 8 p.m., July 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Aug. 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. A reception to unveil the artwork will be held in September.

Nugget Greg Buckner brings Defender Camp to Parker

Denver Nuggets shooting guard Greg Buckner is bringing his youth basketball camp to the Parker Recreation Center in July. Buckner and his fellow coaching staff will work with players to improve their games in a three-day camp July 28 to 30.

Boys and girls ages seven to 18 will work to develop a competitive edge as they improve shooting, ball handling, passing, defense, rebounding, speed, strength and become leaders on and off the court. The weekend camp format works well for students in year round schools and for working parents who might have difficulty getting kids to camp on weekdays.

The camp runs 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 30. Players should bring a sack lunch on Saturday. Registration is $100 and includes a camp T-shirt, jersey top and autographed player card. Parker Library (10851 South Crossroads Drive, 303-841-3503) will be closed Tuesday, May 16 through Monday, May 22.

The Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock (100 South Wilcox Street, 303-688-7700) will be closed Wednesday, May 24 through Wednesday, May 31.

Limited Onsite Services and Scheduled Programs Available...

Onsite services still available during the closures include holds pickup, activities and events scheduled in the meeting rooms (please call ahead to confirm before attending an event), answering circulation questions and reference phone calls, and other helpful customer service. In addition, the Philip S. Miller Library will also be closed on Friday, May 19 for Staff Development Day.

Hookah Bars - Kids Beware! This is WORSE for you than Smoking Cigarettes!

Smoking a hookah, locally known as a "hubbly-bubbly", doesn't water down smoking-related health risks, warns an expert concerned about the spread of this form of tobacco use.
Hookah bars are becoming popular, particularly among students and young adults, around the world.

Hookahs originated in the Middle East. In a hookah, tobacco is heated by charcoal. The tobacco smoke passes through a water-filled chamber, which cools the smoke before it's inhaled by the smoker.

Significant health risks
Some people think hookahs deliver less tar and nicotine than cigarettes and have fewer health consequences because the smoke is filtered by the water.
Not true, Thomas Eissenberg, head of the Clinical Behavioral Pharm acology Laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University in the US, said in a prepared statement.
"Water pipe smoking may be associated with significant health risks, and we only now are beginning to accumulate information on the issue," Eissenberg said.
Initial research indicates hookahs can increase carbon dioxide and nicotine exposure, speed up heart rate, and may contribute to heart disease and cancer.
A practice not to ignore "The water pipe is another method of tobacco use, one that we should not ignore as we fight the tobacco epidemic. Past experience has taught us that ignoring the epidemiology and health effects of tobacco-use products can lead to a public health disaster that may have been preventable," Eissenberg said.
He published a study in the April issue of Preventive Medicine that found hookah smoking, particularly for women, generally is viewed in a more positive light than smoking cigarettes. It's one o f the first studies to examine the effects of social attitudes and gender on hookah and cigarette smoking. - (HealthDayNews)

Administrative Assistant

Primary duties include answering the phones and covering the front desk, filing, copying & stocking forms, processing all student enrollments, upgrades, account changes, scheduling for events such as birthday parties, pizza parties and other events, sales and marketing communications, charity donations, placing merchandise orders, managing inventories, and other duties as assigned. A complete job description is available for review by interested parties. This position may be part time or full time. The primary hours needed are from 3:30 PM to approximately 9:00 PM. Excellent computer skills and personal skills are required. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Part Time Telemarketer

Primary duties will be to call and follow with our existing data base of potential students, no shows for appointments, new leads from various sources. The vast majority of prospects have contacted us in some fashion with interest in martial arts classes. This person may also be asked to represent our school at promotional booths around the area in order to gather new leads. Compensation will be a combination of both fixed wages and commissions. We are looking to fill this position with someone who can work two to three hours per day, and three to five days per week primarily in the evenings between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

Part Time Tiny Tiger Instructor

We need someone to run all Tiny Tiger/Cub classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday mornings. Duties include planning and leading all Tiger classes on the above dates, track students progress towards testing, conduct private lessons with students, complete and send good job notes/emails to students, be available for Tiger parties, be available to represent the school during promotional events held off site, resolve conflicts with students/parents, and other similar and appropriate duties as assigned. Compensation will be based on experience and certification level. The primary hours needed for this position are from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

Local youth perform The Wizard of Oz on Mainstreet Center stage

Join Dorothy and Toto on their journey to see the Wizard of Oz on Oct. 7 and 8 when Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) and 60 local students perform an original musical adaptation of the classic tale, The Wizard of Oz.

A nasty tornado carries the pair from their home in Kansas to the magical land of Oz where they join forces with the dancing Scarecrow, the romantic Tin Man and of course, the Cowardly Lion. Local youth in grades kindergarten through 12 can audition for the above parts and more on Monday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. at the Mainstreet Center. No advance preparation is necessary—just bring your smile! All those auditioning should arrive by 4 p.m. and plan to stay for two hours. Cast and crew must be available for daily rehearsal sessions all week in order to participate.

The Wizard of Oz will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 and at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Mainstreet Center, 19650 E. Mainstreet in downtown Parker. Tickets are $5 for ages three and older, and are available in advance through the Parker Recreation Center. The show will last approximately one hour.

Watch Douglas County Channel 8 during the month of September or visit the Town’s Web site, located at www.parkeronline.org, to watch the new video about the Town of Parker’s Teen Court program. Youth from across Douglas County discuss the program and its many benefits to the community.

The program, entitled “Parker Teen Court,” was produced by Parker’s own Tundra Media in conjunction with the Town of Parker. The show, which was produced in High Definition, is four minutes and 50 seconds in length and highlights the many opportunities in the Teen Court program.

The show will run on DC 8 on the following schedule:
Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday: 11:32 a.m., 4:32 p.m., 9:32 p.m. and 2:32 a.m.

Parker's Teen Court

Parker's Teen Court program has been an incredible opportunity for youth to become involved in the judicial process. The program, which involves REAL defendants and REAL cases, is community-based and designed to be a positive experience for first-time juvenile offenders as well as Court participants. During the month of September, the Parker Teen Court will join 100,000 youth across the nation who volunteer in the more than 1,035 youth courts in 48 states and the District of Columbia in the 4th annual celebration of National Youth Court Month.

This year, youth and adult volunteers in our community have committed more than 277 hours of service to the Parker Teen Court. Our program also has been a positive force in the lives of more than 20 youth participants this year, by providing them with a second chance while holding them accountable for their behavior.

The Parker Teen Court will participate in National Youth Court Month this year by holding an open house and mock trial on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Town Hall, located at 20120 E. Mainstreet. We invite everyone in the Parker community to attend and help us spread the word about this powerful community program.
